Seminarian Joel (Kuriakose) Kurian

Meet Joel (Kuriakose) Kurian

Joel (Kuriakose) Kurian is a third-year seminarian at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan, Pennsylvania. He was born and raised in Queens, New York, and moved to Long Island about fifteen years ago. He is a member of St. Stephen's Indian Orthodox Church in Long Island, New York, in the Northeast American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church.
Before coming to seminary, Joel earned an undergraduate degree in Telecommunications Engineering. After completing his studies, he worked for several years in a variety of roles, including Field Engineer, Telecommunications Operator, and, most recently, IT Engineer at The Juilliard School. During that time, he also earned his MBA. Outside of his studies, he enjoys watching sports, playing basketball, and playing the piano whenever time permits.

When about his experience at St. Tikhon's, Joel says that, as he prepares to complete his final semester, he finds himself reflecting on all the good he has experienced there. One of his favorite aspects of St. Tikhon's is the stillness and quietness. Coming from New York, a very "loud" city, he says it is relaxing and refreshing to return and simply unwind.
Leaving a paid job to become a full-time seminarian was indeed a big step. Looking back on his time at St. Tikhon's, Joel says that if there is one phrase that sums up his experience, especially when facing difficulties and challenges, it is simply: God will provide.
When asked what he loves about St. Tikhon's, Joel says:
“I love how St. Tikhon’s has been very welcoming and supportive of the Malankara Orthodox brotherhood here. We are able to have our own chapel to observe the hours of prayer as well as invite Priests from the Diocese to celebrate the Divine Liturgy.”
