Meet Seminarian Mathews Geevarghese
Mathews Geevarghese (class of 2027) is in his second year at St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Canaan, Pennsylvania.
When asked about his experience at St. Tikhon’s, Mathews describes seminary as a very meaningful and transformative experience. Each semester, he says, the seminarians learn more about the Orthodox Faith, enabling them to grow stronger in their faith. His previous studies helped him develop discipline and focus, but seminary is teaching him how to grow spiritually through prayer, as well as by serving others in need and, in doing so, serving God.
Mathews also says life at St. Tikhon’s is helping him grow outside the classroom. Through the daily prayers in the chapel, attending services at parishes over the weekend, serving in different parish ministries, and spending time with his fellow seminarians, he says he is being formed in ways he often does not even notice. This semester, he also has the opportunity to visit prisoners as part of the prison ministry, an eye-opening experience that is helping him grow in compassion, understanding, and pastoral care beyond what he learns in class.
When asked what he loves about St. Tikhon's, Mathews says:
“What I love most is how the seminary holds space for intellectual, spiritual, and personal growth, for which I am grateful to God and the seminary community. Miles away from the noisy city, walking this beautiful journey together with my fellow brothers in Christ, growing in faith, challenging each other, and praying for each other is invaluable. ”
